What is dragon boat racing?
Dragon boat racing is a boat racing sport that has roots dating back 2000 years to China. It typically sees 20 paddlers, a drummer and a coxswain on one boat, and teams race each other in set distances. Dragon boat racing has been popular in Canada for decades, with paddlers from all ages, athletic abilities, and backgrounds coming together to form teams and race in regattas in Canada.
Which regattas will NDRC participate in this year?
Find a list of our current year regatta plans here.
How much paddling experience do you look for?
Because NDRC is a high-performance crew, we generally expect paddlers to have at least 1 year of paddling experience before trying out. That being said, if you’re interested, please shoot us a message and let us know what you can bring to the team!
How many times a week does the team practice?
NDRC practices 2 times a week on land from September to mid-April, and 3 times a week on the water from mid-April until August. Check out our practice schedule.
The crew is also given workouts by the head coach, and paddlers are expected to complete these workouts on their own.
What is the difference between New College New Dragons and New Dragons Racing Club?
New College New Dragons (NC) are the U24 and University wing of the New Dragons Racing Club (NDRC), whereas the latter is the Premier team. NC races in the University and U24 divisions, and NDRC races in the Premier or Sport divisions. Check out the Dragon Boat Canada rules of racing for crew composition details.
Do I have to pay a separate fee for each roster?
Your total team fee covers racing on both the mixed and gendered rosters. NDRC prides itself on having one of the lowest team fees in the GTA for a Premier team. Please contact us for more info about team fees.
